You can click here to find all our Romantic Picks, in one place! This week’s Romantic Pick comes from the fantasy K-Drama taking over the world, “Alchemy of Souls”. Starring Lee JaeWook, Jung SoMin, Hwang MinHyun, OH MY GIRL’s Arin, Yoo InSoo, and Shin SeungHo in the leading roles, this drama tells the story of the sorcery of soul shifting, a rightful heir’s claim to the throne and a shadow assassin’s search for the truth. Lee JaeWook plays Jang Uk, the eldest son of the influential Jang family, and Jung SoMin plays MuDeok, a lowly blind peasant girl who houses the soul of Naksu, the aforementioned assassin. As fate would have it, they’re tied together in a world of secrets and conspiracy. Spoiler Alert! In the latest episode of “Alchemy of Souls”, Jang Uk has been inadvertently locked in Songrim with a herculean task. He must “read” a book with no visible writing before he can leave. After trying a number of methods but to no avail, Uk realizes that he had just been played. Distraught, he decides to sneak out for a little while to see MuDeok. However, once he gets there, MuDeok isn’t anywhere to be seen. After waiting long enough, Uk sets out to return, and it is only then that MuDeok hears about his visit. At the very last moment, they see each other from afar as Jang Uk sails on a boat and MuDeok watches from atop a bridge. They share reassuring glances that speak louder than words. Jang Uk tells her that he is happy to see her, and she tells him to wait because she will be there soon. To further elaborate, she covers a rock with the “hiring” poster from Songrim and throws it to him. MuDeok indeed has a plan, and she sees it through to the end, passing the open recruitment test, which allows her to get hired as a maid in Songrim. At the same time, with a little help from Master Lee, Jang Uk deciphers Master Seo Gyeong’s book, which gives him permission to leave the training centre. MuDeok has passed out from exhaustion, and Jang Uk takes her to Sejukwon to heal. Once there, Jang Uk tells her all about his task and how the “book” was Seo Gyeong’s unsent love letter to his blind lover Jin SeolRan, so that she could read it with her heart. MuDeok remarks that it was cowardly and foolish of him to have written about his feelings without actually expressing them to her. In a moment of complete honesty, Jang Uk makes a comparison with MuDeok, who, unlike Seo Gyeong, delivered her letter to Jang Uk. He brings out the poster and looks at it fondly. MuDeok doesn’t see how it could be a letter, but Jang Uk explains that a letter doesn’t have to be much. All it has to do is convey one’s feelings. Perhaps in fear of vulnerability, MuDeok retorts, saying that Jang Uk must have pitied her for wanting to get into Songrim as a servant. However, Jang Uk calmly continues, saying that he did feel bad for Naksu, the great warrior, but he was more in a dilemma about whether he should reply as MuDeok’s Young Master or as Naksu’s pupil. Ultimately, he chose to respond based on what he read in her letter, which was the fact that MuDeok would go to great lengths to be with him. As such, he keeps his reply simple: “I missed you too”. In an inner monologue, Naksu admits that her “letter” was something that should not have been delivered or read in the first place. It was her love letter. The episode ends with an air of palpable tension as Jang Uk, and MuDeok reach a turning point in their relationship. We cannot wait to see what happens next. Are you watching “Alchemy of Souls”?
